Transformer Key Features

Following are some of the key features that our power transformer has as per the requirements of Canada national grid station.

Power Rating

The transformer is designed to offer two different power ratings of 10 MVA and 13.3 MVA in order to match the current power rating of the grid station. From these two power ratings the power rating of 13.3 MVA is the rated capacity of the transformer however the factors like impedance and losses are calculated at lower power rating of 10 MVA. As per the Canada national standards, the operating frequency of the transformer is 60 Hz.

Voltage Rating

The transformer has high voltage winding and low voltage winding with high voltage winding offers a range of voltage to match the incoming voltage from the grid station. The high voltage winding of the transformer has Delta configuration. The low voltage winding has a steady voltage output of 13.8 kV with Wye grounded configuration.

WindingVoltage kVConfiguration
HV144.9 to 121.1Delta
LV13.8Wye (grounded)

Current Rating and Tap Changer Position

The transformer offers two different power ratings so for each voltage value from the above given range of voltage, the transformer high voltage winding offers a different current rating. This different current rating will be different for each power rating.

To adjust the voltage as per the grid station requirement, the transformer is equipped with five tap positions. Each position offers a unique combination of current and voltage for each power rating.

Load Performance

The transformer is designed for efficiency, reliability and safety of the electricity distribution system. The transformer offers minimum losses in both no load and on load condition. The mentioned no load and load losses of this transformer calculated at 10 MVA power rating.

The transformer has impedance of 8.52 % at the base line power rating of 10 MVA and its because of the excellent design features, safety devices attached, and high built quality.

Transformer Cooling System

The cooling system of this power transformer is different from what we offer in our standard power transformers. This power transformer is an oil immersed transformer and cooling and insulation of transformer parts using non mineral synthetic oil.

The transformer offers two different cooling mechanisms in a single body to compensate for the extra waste heat generated at transformer winding at peak power rating and electrical load. The transformer offers a synthetic oil natural air natural cooling system KNAN and synthetic oil natural air forced cooling system KNAF.

The KNAN is for lower power rating that is off 10 MVA and KNAF is for high power rating that is off 13.3 MVA.

Transformer Weight

The transformer was designed and developed keeping in mind the transportation and installation at distance sites. Each part design was optimized for less weight without compromising the rigidity of the system. The weight of the transformer includes weight of transformer parts specially tank and the transformer oil.

ItemWeight
Tank Weight14330 Lb
Equipment body load27800 lb
Oil Weight2515 gal
Temperature Rise of oil level65 K @ 13.3 MVA

Total Weight67270 Lb

Advance Engineering Design and Safety Compliance

As the transformer is designed and developed for Canada national grid station, it follows all international standards that Canada follows like that of IEEE and Canada national standard association CSA, specifically CSA C88.

The transformer was designed and built with the best insulation system. This power transformer specifically offers an insulation level of LI650AC275 / LI110AC38 – LI110AC38.

To ensure reliable operation in the outdoor installation, the transformer offers an outer body coated with corrosion paint and all parts made of high corrosion resistance material. The transformer also offers safety features like digital and IoT integrated thermal sensor, oil level sensor, voltage and current sensor for monitoring.
