
Pad mounted transformers are crucial equipment in the American power grid. Monitoring their operational status requires various gauges, indicators, and valves. Below, we’ll introduce common instruments and valves used in this context.
Oil Temperature Gauge
This instrument is installed on the side wall of the transformer to measure and indicate temperature. The temperature measurement range is typically -10°C to 130°C. An oil temperature gauge with electric contacts offers sensitive response, clear instructions, easy installation, and good reliability. It allows remote monitoring of the internal temperature of the transformer to ensure normal operation.
Oil Level Indicator

The oil level indicator is a device used to detect oil levels through sensor technology. It is typically installed on the side wall of the oil tank and comes in two types: with contacts and without contacts. The version with contacts allows for remote monitoring of the transformer’s oil level status during operation. Conversely, an oil level indicator without contacts only permits checking the oil level display on the indicator dial in the low-voltage compartment during regular maintenance.
The oil level indicator with contacts consists of various components including a float, connecting rod, bracket, magnet, indicator, junction box, relay, etc. When the oil level in the tank changes due to fluctuations in oil temperature or other factors, the float in the tank rises or falls accordingly, driving the pointer to indicate the oil level. When the oil level rises, the internal alarm switch opens, reaching the highest oil level (H), and the oil level indicator of the high oil level switch transitions from an open to a closed circuit state, with contacts 1 and 2 closing the circuit. Conversely, when the oil level drops, the internal alarm switch opens, indicating the lowest oil level (L), and the oil level meter in the low oil level switch transitions from an open to a closed circuit state, with contacts 4 and 5 closing.
Transformer Pressure Vacuum Gauge
This gauge, designed specifically for box-type power transformers, measures pressure within the range of -10 to 10 PSIG.
Transformer Pressure Relief Valve
Primarily used to prevent gas pressure in the transformer from exceeding a preset value. When the pressure exceeds 10 PSIG above the release pressure, the valve automatically opens to allow gas to escape.
Transformer Pressure Relief Device: Similar to the pressure relief valve, this disk-type device can rapidly relieve pressure to prevent sudden pressure spikes due to excessive temperature or other abnormalities, thus averting transformer explosions. It is typically installed on the top of the pad-mounted transformer tank.
Transformer Valve Plug

Transformer Drain Valve
Typically made of copper and resembling a faucet, the drain valve on a pad-mounted transformer allows for draining part or all of the liquid if necessary. It also enables regular sampling of transformer oil to check and analyze the gas content in the tank.
