What is the small green electrical box outside my house?

electricity transformer box

The green metal box outside or in front of your house could be an electricity transformer box. Also known as a residential transformer, it is a key piece of equipment in your home's power system. Usually connected to underground cables. It can step down the high voltage (7.2kV, 14.4kV, 12.47kV, 24.94kV) to the low voltage (120V, 240V) required by household electrical equipment.

So, if you don’t see power poles around your neighborhood then that green electrical transformer box could be a residential power transformer. And it carries a safety sign like “CAUTION! HIGH VOLTAGE!”.

What are the dangers of electrical transformer boxes?

The green(grey) electrical transformer box is the one responsible for sending safe electricity to your homes. Being able to install near human activity means it is generally safe.

Because the power supply wires are buried underground, and the residential transformer boxes are locked under normal working conditions, the residential transformer structure is also designed to be tamper-proof and will not be stolen. However, for your safety, you'd better keep a certain distance from it. If you want to grow plants around these boxes, it is best to keep the plants 10 feet away from the transformer at all times.

When you see the electrical transformer box left open without someone attending to it, if you are not an electrical expert do not attempt to touch or go near it, contact your local electrical service provider and let them handle the situation.

Can a green electrical box be moved?

If the green electrical transformer box is installed in public places such as parks and government agencies, it cannot be moved unless it is allowed by the government.

If the box is yours and installed in your yard, you can move it. However, be careful when moving or replacing, and you must find a professional power company to implement it.

What type of transformer is used for residential?

Residential transformers usually come in small to medium sizes and voltage capacities. The most common types of transformers for residential use are pole mounted and pad mounted transformers.

Pole mounted types are the cylindrical containers you see hanging around electrical poles and pad mounted types are the green or gray boxes you see at the back or front of your houses.

Try for free: 3 Phase Pad Mounted Transformer

They could be either a single phase or three phase, which refers to the transformer's load distribution; dry type or oil-immersed type, which refers to the transformer’s insulation and cooling systems.

Voltage requirements could also vary depending on the country where you live. For example, in the US it's single phase 120V and 240V.  Whereas in China, it’s single phase 220V.
The number of residential transformer installations and the kVA ratings would depend on how dense is the population in your neighborhood.

Residential transformer ratings can be as low as 25 kVA or as high as 500 kVA. A standard pole mounted transformer with 25 kVA to 75 kVA could manage a maximum of 3 households.

How long does a residential transformer last?

A residential transformer can last long if it is operated at standard conditions or under normal loading conditions.

Average life expectancy can range from 20 to 30 years and up to 50 years if it is maintained and operated at ideal conditions.

Routine maintenance and proper loading are two of the key things that can help extend the life of a residential transformer.

Are residential transformers safe?

residential transformerResidential transformers are fairly small in size and are less dangerous than other transformers used in substations.

They have been used in residential and industrial areas for decades and under normal conditions, there are no major problems observed aside from hearing an almost inaudible and very faint humming sound.

The homeowner's safety should already be considered before the transformers are installed. Certain local standards cover that.

However, suppose you ever wonder why there are some instances that a transformer near your area explodes. In that case, it is probably caused by overloading, water penetration, or the transformer being struck by lightning.

Most residential transformers are equipped with fuses to prevent damage but when a transformer explosion happens, call your local electric provider immediately.

How far should a transformer be from the house?

The distance would differ on how kV a transformer has. For transformers at 13.8 kV up to not more than 34.5 kV, the safe distance from the residence would be 12 meters clearance from the front of the transformer and not less than 8 meters of safety clearance from the side.

Beyond 34.5 kV, the required distance would be 15 meters from the front while the side should have a clearance of more than 12 meters.

For pad-mounted transformers, the required distance would be 5 meters clearance from residential buildings, and any 13.8 kV electrical equipment must have 3 meters clearance from buildings.

Residential transformer weight

residential transformer weight
Residential transformer weight can vary. Depending on the rating, a lower rating could be lightweight. However, a pole mounted residential transformer can weigh more than 100 Kg, while a pad mounted residential transformer can be as heavy as 1000 Kg.

That is why it is very important to have clearances that provide enough space for line trucks for maintenance and replacements. Do note that a line truck can be as heavy as and as large as a cement truck.

How to choose residential transformer supplier?

residential transformer supplier
In choosing the right residential transformer you have to consider the features mentioned a while ago such as safety and quality, sizing, and price.

In addition to that, you have to check if the supplier is a trader or a manufacturer. Direct manufacturers like Daelim can give you a better price than any trader.

The supplier's background about its experience and capability is another piece of information that you have to look into.

Daelim has been in the transformer manufacturing industry for more than 20 years. With a foundation built from experience and continuous innovation.

Apart from that, the after-sales service of a transformer supplier could be a deal breaker. A good after-sales service is a great indication that you are in good hands.

At Daelim, we make sure to give our customers the best service that we can offer. That includes excellent after-sales service. We have different after-sales installations around the major states in America. There are also after-sales service and transformer installation teams in Canada.
